Baptism is the first important event in a baby’s life. It usually takes place within days or at the latest, months after his birth. Devout Catholics make it a point to have the baby blessed in the Christian way to make sure that whatever happens he will already enjoy the grace of being a Christian. Baptism involves a ceremony in a church with godparents standing as witnesses in the ceremony. It is a short ceremony but is very symbolic because it marks the baby’s membership in the Christian world.
A baptismal reception usually follows the ceremony. The family is present in full force and friends are invited to partake of a meal. It can be a grandiose or a modest affair depending on the choice of the parents. Baptism gifts are customarily given to the baby. This can range from baby things and toys to pledges of monetary donations.
