What does it all mean anyway? For some of us the holiday season has left us filled with exhaustion, worry that we forgot someone, guilt because we did forget someone, a bank account in the red and/or a feeling of bliss had finding the perfect something to show our love.
Regardless of the feeling you get from giving and receiving gifts it should really all just be about one simple thing. You have extended something to say “I thought about you,” “I’m sorry,” “I love you,” or “Here I didn’t forget you,” without the expectation of getting something in return. Gifts are just another way of socially interacting in a human society.

The plain truth is that Americans love to consume, and we do it with more abandon than ever during the holiday season. Nearly a quarter of all retail goods move out of stores and into homes between Thanksgiving and Christmas (and, we suspect, often into landfills by January).

Make sure that when you are considering a gift that you consider that child’s interests, likes, hobbies, and age just as you would an adult. Kids can be picky gift receivers and often not as tactful with opinions of the gift. Another thing to keep in mind is their parents. Of course you don’t have to but do expect the same courtesy in return. I know my sister-in-law has a box in her garage labeled with each of her brother’s names so that she can make sure to hand down the noisy obnoxious toys her children’s have received back to them in due time.

Warning: A toy that’s not age-appropriate for your child will create frustration and could lead to serious injury.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that about 140,700 children were taken to hospital emergency rooms in 2005 to be treated for toy-related injuries and 20 kids were killed in toy-related accidents.
“As children mature, they play differently and interact with their toys differently,” says Dr. Mark A. Brandenburg, director of the Oklahoma Institute for Disaster and Emergency Medicine in Tulsa. “Parents need to understand that there are certain characteristics of their child’s activity that can make a toy dangerous at a certain age. When parents understand that, they can size up toys with a critical eye in the store.”
