It is Christmas time and it must be the time of year with the highest usage of ribbons. There must be1001 uses of this thin band of flexible material we call decorative ribbon. For Christmas it is used to adorn our Christmas trees and other ornaments. It embellishes presents that are being prepared for gift giving. Ribbons are also used to beautify clothes that will be worn on this day.

Ribbons are made of different kinds of materials. The more popular ones among cloth ribbons are chiffon, organdie and organza. These are materials that are lightweight and create a sheer effect. Grosgrain ribbons are chosen for the supple feel that gives a crisp appearance. Satin-finished acetate ribbons are popular in floral arrangements and gift boxes.

Step by Step Instructions on How to Make a Basic Bow

Ribbons formed into a bow will never run out of style. They are used on gift boxes to provide a preview of what is inside. They are also used on the head and are called hair bows. They are often used to enhance clothing especially on children. Since bows have many uses, we better learn how to make them.

Here is a simple fail-safe way to make a basic bow:

1. Using 2-1/3 yards of ribbon, cut the ribbon into single lengths to make loops: Cut one 3″ piece for the center loop and two 4″ pieces, two 5″ pieces, two 7″ pieces and two 8″ pieces for the rest of the bow. Cut the remaining piece of ribbon in half for tails and set aside.

2. Fold each section in half and hot glue the ends together. Scrunch the ends as you glue them to give the bow a “tied look”.

3. Lay the two largest sections end to end and hot glue one end slightly over the other. Add the rest of the loops starting from the largest to the smallest, hot gluing the ends to the center on each side as you go.

4. Glue in the center loop after all the other loops are in place. Cut the remaining ribbon into two equal sections for the tails. Hot glue the tails to the back of the bow. Cut the ends in inverted “V’s”.
