Gift Ideas for Children

Make sure that when you are considering a gift that you consider that child’s interests, likes, hobbies, and age just as you would an adult. Kids can be picky gift receivers and often not as tactful with opinions of the gift. Another thing to keep in mind is their parents. Of course you don’t have to but do expect the same courtesy in return. I know my sister-in-law has a box in her garage labeled with each of her brother’s names so that she can make sure to hand down the noisy obnoxious toys her children’s have received back to them in due time.

Here are some great ideas to keep in mind when looking for that perfect gift:

Talk to the parents and ask for ideas. Too often our children bombard us with wants, ask more specifically about the child’s likes and interests are.

Keep it simple and complete. You don’t want to give a gift that requires lots of assembly, or another purchase. Include the batteries, include the pieces to make your gift fun, and most of all don’t give a gift that the child can’t use like media they can’t play.

Make sure you are giving age appropriate toys and games. There is nothing worse then a toddler being told they can’t play with the really cool transformer you just got them for several years!

Remember what you enjoyed playing with as a child. Some of the best toys weren’t always the trendiness but the ones you could spend hours with. Entertaining toys can also be quit educational. Some of the best toys have value on multiple levels.

If you need more specific ideas, here you go:

Lessons: If the child is into music, or simply admire your yo-yoing ability, a very personal gift is lessons and an instrument.

Subscriptions: Weather its to a teen magazine, Highlights, or a favorite comic book this is a great gift that lasts all year long. Buy the latest edition and wrap it with a bow and note.

Science Stuff: I loved my microscope, I envied those with a telescope, and long to be a little kid again every time I see the CSI and spy kits at the toy store.

More Science Stuff: Just find the right aisle in the toy store or go online to find good old fashioned Ant Farms, Sea Monkey, and Crystal gardens. You would be surprised at all the really cool stuff you can make. One year I even got my Dad a Blizzard in a bucket so he could play in the snow.

A sleeping bag or tent: Include an invitation for a camping trip or slumber party. Remember to discuss this with parents first.

Remote Control Cars: The most Fun I ever had Christmas afternoon was racing my RC car around the driveway. Don’t forget to include all the pieces.

Craft Kits: There are so many varieties available now, take your pick.

Jewelry: Monogram necklaces, a piece of their birth stone, or a charm bracelet are all great ideas

Make Believe: All kinds of value and ideas here, swords, tools, dress-up, kitchen stuff, shopping carts, doctor’s kits. And don’t worry about them already having them, more of this is always fun.

A bank, or safe complete with their first savings amount.

An all time favorite of boys of all ages are Walkie Talkies. Please include the batteries.

These are just a few ideas to help you get started. Once you know the child’s interest you can search online for more ideas or browse your local toy store.
