Mother’s Day is a relatively modern tradition, which started only in the early 1900s. It is different however from Mothering Sunday which began in the 16th century and is also known as Mother’s Day in the United Kingdom. It was Anna Jarvis who created the modern Mother’s Day as a day for honoring mothers. In 1912, she founded the Mother’s Day International Association, having had trademarked the phrase “Mother’s Day.” It is celebrated during the second Sunday in May.
